Historic Blakeley State Park and the Alabama Humanities Foundation are honored to welcome noted award-winning archaeologist and author Dr. Ian Brown to the park for a special lecture and guided tour of the Bottle Creek Mound Site. Dr. Brown, longtime Professor and Curator of Gulf Coast Archaeology in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alabama, is the preeminent authority on the amazing Bottle Creek site, having conducted the most extensive archaeological investigations of the mound center to date and authored and edited two books associated with those explorations: Bottle Creek, A Pensacola Culture Site in South Alabama and Bottle Creek Reflections: The Personal Side of Archaeology in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
Bottle Creek is the location of the Gulf Coast’s largest Mississippian mound center, featuring and incredible 18 mounds which hundreds of years ago represented one of the largest native communities in the region. Historic Blakeley State Park regularly takes visitors to the site by boat during the winter months, which is a stop on the Alabama Indigenous Mounds Trail. Dr. Brown will guide our first visit of the season to the mound center on Saturday, Nov. 16.
